The head of military intelligence for eastern Libya’s Libyan National Army (LNA) was killed in a car bombing outside his home in Benghazi, security sources said.
Brigadier Fowzi Mansouri died after an explosive device detonated in his vehicle on Monday evening in the city’s Hawari district, two security sources told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, and the sources did not provide further details about the explosive device or circumstances surrounding the bombing.
Mansouri’s killing underscores the persistent security tensions in Libya, where competing political authorities and powerful armed factions continue to wield influence despite a 2020 ceasefire that largely ended years of major fighting.
Libya has remained divided between rival power centres since 2014, three years after a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi.
The LNA, commanded by Khalifa Haftar, controls large parts of eastern and southern Libya and is aligned with authorities based in Benghazi. The internationally recognised Government of National Unity, meanwhile, is headquartered in Tripoli and exercises control over much of western Libya.
