Nigeria’s technology regulator has inaugurated a new taskforce to accelerate the rollout of the country’s sovereign cloud infrastructure programme.
The National Information Technology Development Agency launched the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative Implementation Taskforce on Monday, shifting the programme from design into delivery.
The initiative aims to anchor Nigeria’s digital sovereignty in servers and systems the nation can call its own.
It seeks to build a cloud and data ecosystem that is secure, resilient, competitive and ready for investment, according to NITDA.
The agency said the launch follows the rollout of regulatory, technical, assurance and investment tools underpinning the broader initiative.
Those tools are meant to guide cloud adoption, data governance, infrastructure assurance and technical standards across the sector.
The taskforce will act as the main coordinating body across government, regulators and industry stakeholders, NITDA said.
Its mandate covers regulatory alignment, institutional coordination and resolving obstacles that cut across multiple agencies.
The body will also monitor implementation and support efforts to mobilise investment and expand local technical capacity.
NITDA stressed the taskforce will not override existing regulators, but will work alongside them.
Each participating institution will retain its statutory powers even as coordination improves, the agency said.
Officials expect the initiative to strengthen the resilience of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure over time.
They also anticipate growth in domestic data-centre capacity and greater participation from local technology firms.
The programme is designed to draw sustainable private investment into Nigeria’s cloud sector, according to the agency.
Nigeria hopes the effort will position it as a trusted hub for cloud and digital infrastructure in Africa.
With the taskforce now in place, the initiative enters a phase focused on execution and measurable results.
