Cape Verde is mourning the deaths of at least 25 people, most of them children and teenagers, after a bus crashed on Fogo Island.
President José Maria Neves attended the funeral of some of the victims on Sunday as families and communities began burying those killed in the tragedy.
Several other passengers were injured, some seriously, according to local authorities.
Bus plunges into ravine on Fogo Island
The accident happened on Saturday as the bus was returning to São Filipe following an excursion to the Pico do Fogo volcanic crater.
There were 32 people on board when the vehicle left the road and plunged into a deep ravine.
The driver was also among those killed. He had organised the excursion as a gift for pupils he transported to school during the academic year.
Rescue teams work through the night
The wreckage came to rest in a rocky valley that was difficult for emergency crews to reach.
Rescue workers continued operations through the night as they worked to reach people trapped inside the vehicle.
Authorities have not yet provided full details about what caused the bus to leave the road.

President Neves described the accident as a “great catastrophe” in a social media post.
He joined mourners at the funeral on Sunday as Cape Verde grieved one of the country’s deadliest recent road accidents.
The scale of the tragedy has been particularly devastating because most of those killed were children or teenagers.
