Russia is promoting its upgraded Yak-130M fighter jet to African countries as it looks to expand its defence partnerships across the continent.
Alexander Mikheyev, head of Russian state arms exporter Rosoboronexport, said the modernised aircraft could meet the combat aviation needs of most countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
His comments came as Russian aviation companies prepared to showcase military aircraft at the El Alamein Airshow in Egypt, scheduled for September 8-10.
Russia promotes Yak-130M fighter jet in Africa
The Yak-130M is an upgraded trainer aircraft that can also operate as a light combat jet.
According to Mikheyev, the aircraft can carry modern weapons, including missiles and aerial bombs.
He said these capabilities could make the Yak-130M attractive to African air forces seeking a relatively versatile combat aircraft.
The claim that the aircraft can meet most of Africa’s combat aviation requirements comes from Rosoboronexport and reflects the company’s assessment of the market.
Russia offers local weapons production
Russia is also seeking deeper industrial partnerships with African countries.
Mikheyev said Rosoboronexport is already working with several African partners on cooperation involving Russian-designed aircraft weapons and engines.
The company is also prepared to discuss local production of aviation equipment with African customers.
Such agreements could expand Russia’s role beyond simply selling military aircraft to African governments.
Russian aircraft take centre stage in Egypt
Russia is using the El Alamein Airshow to promote several aircraft and defence systems.
Rostec plans to showcase the export version of its Su-57E fighter jet at the event.
The Russian defence company also said the aircraft would display a previously undisclosed weapon system during the show.
The event gives Russian manufacturers an opportunity to market their aircraft directly to African military delegations.
Russia expands aviation ties with Africa
Africa remains an important market for Russia’s defence industry.
Russia has particularly strong military aviation ties with countries such as Algeria and Egypt.
In May, Russia delivered another batch of Su-34M strike aircraft to Algeria, according to the source material. Algerian defence publications have also reported orders involving Su-34ME, Su-35E and Su-57E aircraft.
The push for the Yak-130M shows that Moscow is also targeting countries that may not require or be able to acquire more advanced fighter aircraft.
