Rescuers are searching for more than 100 people after an Indonesia passenger ship carrying 243 people sank in the Java Sea.
Authorities said 115 people were evacuated from the Virgo Transport 8. One of those rescued later died.
The vessel lost contact with its operator early on Sunday while travelling between the Indonesian islands of Java and Borneo.
Ships and a helicopter have been deployed as the search continues in difficult sea conditions.
Indonesia passenger ship loses contact
The Virgo Transport 8 departed Surabaya on Java on Saturday and was heading towards Banjarmasin, a port city on Borneo.
Indonesia’s search-and-rescue agency said the ship lost contact with its operator during the early hours of Sunday.
Its last known position was around 81 nautical miles, or about 150 kilometres, from Banjarmasin, AFP reported.
Authorities are continuing to search for passengers and crew who remain unaccounted for.
Rough seas hamper rescue operation
Rescue teams are facing difficult conditions in the Java Sea.
I Putu Sudayana, head of the local search-and-rescue office in Banjarmasin, said waves were reaching up to 2.5 metres.
He said the conditions posed risks even to vessels involved in the rescue operation.
Search ships and a helicopter have been deployed to locate those still missing.
Cause of sinking remains unknown
Authorities have not yet determined why the passenger ship sank.
Investigators are examining several possible factors, including weather conditions and potential technical problems.
Therefore, although the vessel encountered rough weather, authorities have not established that weather caused the sinking.
Ferries remain vital in Indonesia
Ferries are an important form of transport across Indonesia.
The country consists of thousands of islands, making maritime travel essential for millions of people.
Sea journeys can also provide a more affordable and accessible alternative to air travel between islands.
Indonesia has experienced several ferry accidents in recent months.
Last month, one person died and five others were reported missing after a fire aboard a ferry travelling between Bali and Lombok.
In July, another ferry carrying more than 70 people sank near Selayar Island, south of Sulawesi.
The latest search operation remains under way as authorities work to locate those still missing and determine what caused the Virgo Transport 8 to sink.
