The United Kingdom is increasing its student visa financial requirements, meaning African students planning to study in Britain will need to demonstrate greater financial resources.
From November 30, 2026, international students heading to London must show they have access to at least £14,130 ($18,760) to cover nine months of living expenses.
Students studying outside London will need to demonstrate £10,827 ($14,370).
These amounts exclude tuition fees, adding to the overall cost of pursuing higher education in the UK.
UK student visa financial requirements increase
According to Business Insider Africa, the revised requirements represent a 2.7% increase in the minimum funds international students must demonstrate.
For students attending universities in London, the nine-month requirement will rise from £13,761 to £14,130.
Outside London, the threshold will increase from £10,539 to £10,827.
This means applicants studying in London must demonstrate an additional £369, while those studying elsewhere will need an extra £288.
The changes were outlined in a UK Home Office immigration rules statement published on September 3, 2026.
British authorities said the adjustment was designed to align international student financial requirements with maintenance support available to domestic students during the 2026–2027 academic year.
What the new rules mean for African students
The higher financial requirements will affect students from countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa.
Applicants must demonstrate that they can cover both their living expenses and outstanding tuition fees.
This means the total amount required may be significantly higher than the published maintenance threshold.
For families financing overseas education through personal savings, the increase adds another expense to an already costly process.
The financial requirements also come alongside tuition fees, travel costs and other expenses associated with studying abroad.
Although the increase is relatively modest, it could create additional challenges for applicants with limited financial resources.
Students must meet UK visa financial rules
Under the existing UK student visa system, applicants generally need to hold the required funds for at least 28 consecutive days.
The end of that period must fall within 31 days of submitting their visa application.
However, some applicants qualify for exemptions or reduced documentary requirements.
Nationals of certain countries, including Botswana, Mauritius and Tunisia, may benefit from arrangements allowing them to apply without initially submitting financial evidence.
UK immigration authorities can still request supporting documents when necessary.
Students are therefore advised to review the requirements applicable to their nationality and circumstances before applying.
UK student visa approvals decline
The financial changes come as Britain experiences a decline in international student visa approvals.
According to UK Home Office immigration statistics cited by Business Insider Africa, the country granted 383,455 sponsored study visas, including dependants, in the year ending June 2026.
This represented an 11% decline compared with the previous year.
The figure was also 41% below the peak recorded in 2023.
Nigeria remained one of the UK’s largest sources of international students.
During the same period, Nigerian nationals received 26,060 sponsored study visas as main applicants, accounting for approximately 7% of the total.
The decline in overall visa approvals follows immigration restrictions introduced in January 2024.
Those changes prevented most international students enrolled in taught postgraduate programmes from bringing family members to Britain.
Higher costs add pressure on African applicants
The UK remains an important destination for African students seeking international qualifications and career opportunities.
However, higher financial thresholds could influence decisions about where to pursue higher education.
Students considering British universities must now prepare for increased living-cost requirements alongside tuition fees and other expenses.
The revised thresholds will apply to student visa applications submitted on or after November 30, 2026.
Applicants submitting their applications before that date will remain subject to the financial requirements applicable at the time of submission.
