22 missing in deadly clash between Ethiopian and Kenyan fishermen

At least 22 people are missing following a violent confrontation between Ethiopian and Kenyan fishermen near the Omo River along the Kenya-Ethiopia border, Kenyan officials said Sunday.

The clash erupted on Saturday evening in the Lopeimukat and Natira areas, according to Turkana County Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai. Local police reported that 22 Kenyan fishermen remain unaccounted for, while 15 boats were stolen in the attack. Six Ethiopian fishermen from the Dasenech ethnic group were rescued and repatriated.

Kenya’s Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said on X that additional security forces had been deployed to the border and that Nairobi was in talks with Addis Ababa to ease tensions and prevent further violence.
