8 killed as rival Wazalendo factions clash in South Kivu

Rival Wazalendo factions led by self-styled generals Malaika and Nyakiliba fought for control of Mwenga in South Kivu from Sept. 17, leaving at least 8 people dead — five militiamen and three civilians — and several others wounded, local civil society said on Saturday.

Julius Byemba Kika said the clashes stemmed from a dispute over pay-to-pass roadblocks that charged 20,000–100,000 Congolese francs ($7–$36) per crossing. Tensions spiked when an order was issued to dismantle the barriers. Calm returned after Nyakiliba’s forces withdrew toward Kigogo, he added. Wazalendo leader Foka Mike also confirmed the deaths.

Two days of fighting caused significant property damage and deepened insecurity in Mwenga, where residents already face soaring food prices due to the impassable RN2 and the wider impact of the M23 rebellion. The territory has seen repeated armed rivalries, including recent deadly clashes in Muhuzi.

Separately in North Kivu, heavy battles since Friday have pitted Wazalendo forces against AFC/M23 rebels in the Osso Banyungu area of Masisi territory. The Congolese army (FARDC) backed operations with airstrikes around Bibwe, witnesses said, reporting intense gunfire that disrupted traffic between Nyabiondo and Kashebere and sparked panic. The M23 and FARDC accuse each other of violating the Doha framework agreement.
