Accra protests intensify as protest leader, others detained

Ghanaian police arrested three more protesters on Monday, including Oliver Barker-Vormawor, leader of the Democracy Hub group.

This follows the earlier detention of 42 protesters after clashes over illegal mining and economic issues. The protests began on Friday and were planned to continue through Monday in Accra.

Police spokesperson Grace Ansah-Akrofi confirmed the arrests, accusing Barker-Vormawor of participating in “various unlawful acts” during the demonstrations.

The protesters, mostly young people, marched through the capital, protesting environmental damage from illegal mining and economic mismanagement.

Ansah-Akrofi stated the protesters unlawfully gathered, attacked police officers, blocked traffic, and damaged property.

Earlier police reports highlighted cases of protestors tampering with police vehicles and disrupting public order in the streets.

Barker-Vormawor denied the allegations, claiming he remained in communication with authorities and had not evaded arrest.

His group, Democracy Hub, has called for peaceful dialogue with the government to ensure the safety of protesters.

The protests come as Ghana prepares for its presidential election in December, with economic concerns taking center stage.
