Bestselling Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused a Lagos hospital of delaying a legal inquest into the death of her young son.
Her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, died on 7 January at Euracare Multispecialist Hospital during routine diagnostic procedures.
Adichie, who has spoken publicly about her grief, described the loss as an unbearable pain and alleged serious medical mismanagement.
According to her account, a hospital medical director admitted that an anaesthesiologist administered a dose of propofol during an MRI scan that led to respiratory and cardiac arrest.
She claims this resulted in a fatal complication during sedation.
Despite these alleged internal acknowledgements, Adichie said the hospital issued a death certificate attributing the child’s death to severe meningitis.
The hospital had initially requested a coroner’s inquest in January, reportedly in response to public speculation about negligence.
However, Adichie has accused the facility of using delaying tactics to obstruct the proceedings, which were scheduled for mid-April.
She criticised the hospital for what she described as a lack of transparency and accountability in handling the case.
The hospital has previously denied any wrongdoing, and has not issued a detailed public response to the latest allegations.
