Africa calls for climate action, funding at summit

African leaders gathered at the World Leaders Climate Action Summit (WLCAS) in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Tuesday to address the pressing issue of climate change.

They emphasized the need for increased financial support from wealthier nations to help them mitigate the impacts of climate change and achieve their climate goals.

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo highlighted his country’s efforts to reduce emissions, including tree planting initiatives and investments in renewable energy.

However, he stressed the need for significant financial support to fully implement these plans.

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa underscored the devastating effects of El Nino-induced droughts on his country.

He called for immediate action to address climate change and fulfill existing agreements.

Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe emphasized the importance of climate justice and shared responsibility among nations.

He noted that Africa, despite contributing minimally to global emissions, is disproportionately affected by climate change.

Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and the Republic of Congo’s President Denis Sassou Nguesso also highlighted the need for increased climate financing and fair distribution of resources to help developing countries adapt to and mitigate climate change.

As the COP29 summit continues, African leaders will continue to advocate for their priorities and seek global support to address the climate crisis.
