Uganda confirmed three new Ebola cases on Saturday, bringing its total to five since the outbreak was first detected on 15 May. The patients include a driver, a health worker and a Congolese woman, all currently alive.
In neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, the outbreak remains concentrated in conflict-hit eastern provinces including Ituri and South Kivu, with 82 confirmed cases and seven deaths reported, alongside hundreds of suspected infections.
The World Health Organization (World Health Organization) has declared the outbreak an international health emergency, raising the risk level in the DRC to “very high” while keeping global risk “low.”
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) said ten countries are at risk due to cross-border movement and insecurity.
The outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists.
