African Union hopes Trump will reconsider US exit from WHO

The African Union (AU) has called on U.S. President Donald Trump to reconsider his decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO).

On his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order formalizing the U.S. exit from the UN health agency.

The move was criticized for the potential disruption to global health efforts.

African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat stressed the significance of the U.S. in shaping global health standards.

For over seven decades, the U.S. has played a pivotal role in crafting WHO instruments and norms.

The executive order pointed to the WHO’s mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic, its failure to enact needed reforms, and the influence of political agendas on its operations.

However, Mahamat reminded that the U.S. has been a vital partner in Africa’s health initiatives, notably supporting the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This collaboration has strengthened efforts to tackle global health challenges.

Mahamat expressed hope that the new administration will reassess its stance.

“Now, more than ever, the world depends on the WHO to safeguard global public health,” he stated.

The WHO, established on April 7, 1948, includes 194 member states and operates in over 150 locations worldwide.

The agency is at the forefront of addressing health emergencies and promoting global health security.

The AU’s appeal underscores the urgency for continued international cooperation in managing global health crises.
