African Union, IGAD put forward notion to end conflict in Sudan

Sudan’s political parties have announced that the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have put forward a new vision to end the war. This initiative aims to facilitate a comprehensive political process involving the participation of all parties.

The National Accord Forces stated that a meeting was convened at the invitation of the AU and IGAD, attended by political and civil forces.

The statement further mentioned that the AU and IGAD put forth a vision suggesting the organization of a preparatory conference preceding the political process to deliberate on dialogue management. The vision also outlines the participation rates of each bloc, the venue, the schedule for the national dialogue, and the role of the regional and international community.

Various reports suggest that Egyptian President Abdelfattah al-Sisi held discussions with the chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, on recent developments in Africa and efforts to bring an end to the ongoing war in Sudan.

The Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC) and other civil forces are preparing to hold meetings in Addis Ababa to consult on establishing the largest civil anti-war front.

The FFC has called for the consolidation of all initiatives at regional and international levels to support the Jeddah negotiations, sponsored by Saudi Arabia and the US. The aim is to achieve a permanent ceasefire, followed by a political process that paves the way for the transition to civilian governance.

The AU and IGAD emphasize that the crisis in Sudan has no military solution, urging the conflicting parties to engage in negotiations to bring an end to the war.
