African Union urges restraint after US, Israel strikes on Iran

The African Union on Saturday urged restraint after coordinated US and Israeli strikes hit targets inside Iran.

The bloc warned that escalating conflict could disrupt global energy markets and deepen economic strain across Africa.

AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf called on all sides to respect international law and the United Nations Charter.

He stressed that rising tensions threaten global stability, food security and economic resilience, particularly in Africa.

Youssouf urged sustained diplomacy, pointing to mediation efforts led by Oman as a path to de-escalation.

Talks between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme recently concluded in Geneva without a public breakthrough.

Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi said after meeting US Vice President JD Vance that “peace is within our reach.”

Video statements from US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested mounting pressure on Tehran.

The strikes revive memories of last year’s brief war, when Israel and later the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites.
