AI skilling, innovation take center stage in South Africa’s G20 role

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that South Africa will prioritize the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for sustainable development during its G20 presidency. 

He expressed particular enthusiasm for the National AI Skilling Initiative, which aims to train public servants in AI, enhancing government service delivery. 

South Africa is also finalizing a cybersecurity bill to safeguard online government services and protect digital transactions, alongside developing a National AI Policy to foster innovation while addressing AI’s broader implications.   

Ramaphosa lauded Microsoft’s commitment to training one million South Africans in AI skills, machine learning, and cybersecurity by 2026, viewing it as a significant vote of confidence in the country’s economy. 

He emphasized AI’s “transformative potential” and the critical need for skilled talent, highlighting its role in job creation. 

The president reiterated South Africa’s commitment to ensuring new technologies drive Africa’s growth, industrialization, and progress.

He expressed high expectations that South Africa’s G20 presidency will yield tangible results, expanding the global digital economy and ensuring equitable access to AI benefits.
