The Tillaberi region is a known hotspot for jihadist activity in West Africa, with networks linked to both al Qaeda and Islamic State. Sources varied on the death toll, with one reporting 20 soldiers killed, another citing over a dozen, and a third confirming at least 10 fatalities.
Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack in Tillaberi, along with separate operations in Mali and Burkina Faso, releasing statements and photos through its Sahel media wing, Al-Zallaqa. The claim was first highlighted by the SITE Intelligence Group, a U.S.-based organization that monitors militant communications.
A spokesperson for the Nigerien government did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Officials in Mali and Burkina Faso were also unavailable for immediate comment.
Niger is among several West African countries facing Islamist insurgencies originating from Mali over the past 12 years. The ongoing violence has killed thousands and displaced millions across the region.
