Algerian authorities have seized 1.65 million ecstasy pills in what is being described as the largest drug haul in Africa. The shipment, hidden in a truck arriving via a ship from France’s Marseille port, was intercepted on Monday.
The massive drug bust, valued at nearly $30 million, reveals a significant operation by an international criminal network operating between Morocco and France. Nine suspects have been arrested in connection with the operation.
Police also seized several vehicles and large sums of cash believed to be proceeds from criminal activities. The haul, said to be worth around 4 billion dinars, marks a historic victory in the country’s ongoing battle against drug trafficking.
While authorities did not disclose the nationalities of those arrested, the suspects face serious charges, including international drug trafficking and money laundering. The individuals have been referred to prosecutors for further legal proceedings.
This significant operation highlights Algeria’s growing role in curbing cross-border drug trade and emphasizes the ongoing threat posed by international crime syndicates.
