Algerian authorities suspended Echorouk News TV for 10 days on Friday after the channel used a racist term in a social media post.
The derogatory word was used in reference to African migrants following police raids that resulted in the detention of sub-Saharan migrants.
The National Authority for Radio and Television (ANIRA) condemned the incident, calling the post “extremely serious.”
ANIRA stated that the term used was an attack on human dignity and conveyed hate speech against migrants based on their race.
The authority also demanded an official apology from the channel’s management.
Algeria has long been a transit point for tens of thousands of undocumented African migrants seeking to reach Europe.
Many migrants seek work opportunities in the country, hoping to secure a better future.
Since early April, Algeria has expelled approximately 5,000 African migrants to neighbouring Niger, with around half of them originating from Niger.
The expulsions are part of an ongoing effort to address illegal migration and its associated challenges.
