Algerian influencer to stand trial in France for inciting violence

An Algerian influencer, known as Zazou Youssef, is set to face trial in France next month on terrorism charges.

Prosecutors in Brest confirmed the 25-year-old, identified as Zazou Youssef., was taken into custody Friday for allegedly inciting violence.

He is accused of posting a TikTok video on December 31 advocating attacks in France and unrest in Algeria.

The charge of “publicly advocating an act of terrorism” could lead to seven years in prison and a €100,000 fine.

The investigation began after police alerted Finistère’s prefect, Alain Espinasse, who ordered an immediate judicial inquiry.

Youssef resides in France on a temporary permit and previously appealed a conviction linked to the 2023 riots.

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau emphasized accountability, stating on X that Youssef must “answer for his actions in court.”

TikTok confirmed banning the account for multiple violations of its hate speech policies, adding urgency to the trial.

This case highlights ongoing challenges in monitoring social media for extremist content and maintaining public safety.
