Ali Bongo leaves Gabon and arrives in Angola with wife and son

Gabon’s ousted president Ali Bongo has flown to Angola with his wife Sylvia and son Noureddin, according to the Angolan presidency.

They were welcomed for humanitarian reasons and will decide their future exile location.

Sylvia and Noureddin were freed after nearly two years of detention following the August 2023 coup and diplomatic efforts from Angola.

They had been accused of embezzlement and money laundering.

Family lawyer Francois Zimeray confirmed their release, thanking those involved in the “long judicial and diplomatic efforts.”

Ali Bongo, initially under house arrest, was later said to be free, a claim his supporters disputed.

African Union officials had called for their release last month.

Coup leader Brice Oligui Nguema, now president, had denied allegations of torture during their detention.

Nguema was recently sworn in for a seven-year term after an election win.

Bongo had ruled Gabon since 2009, succeeding his father who held office for over four decades.
