Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was injured in a road accident in south-west Nigeria that left two people dead, authorities said on Tuesday.
Joshua was travelling along the Lagos–Ibadan expressway near the Sagamu Interchange when the vehicle he was in collided with a stationary truck at the side of the road, according to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Officials said five men were in the vehicle, a Lexus SUV, which was suspected of exceeding the speed limit while attempting to overtake. Two occupants were killed in the crash, while Joshua was rescued alive with minor injuries. Two others escaped unhurt.
Emergency services and police arrived at the scene within minutes of being notified, the FRSC said, adding that images from the site showed severe damage to the vehicle.
A relative of the boxer told the BBC that the incident came as a shock to the family and confirmed that Joshua had been travelling from Lagos to the family home at the time of the crash.
Joshua, 35, is a former unified world heavyweight champion and one of Britain’s most high-profile athletes. No further details about his condition were immediately available.
