At least 13 dead as landslide hits Kenya’s Rift Valley; dozens rescued

At least 13 people were killed in a pre-dawn landslide in Kenya’s Rift Valley on Saturday after torrential rains, police said.

Nineteen survivors were pulled from the debris and an unknown number remain missing, Elgeyo-Marakwet County police commander Peter Mulinge told Reuters. Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said military and police helicopters have been deployed to support search-and-rescue operations.

Kenya has suffered repeated landslides and floods in recent years, with scientists linking more frequent and intense downpours to climate change. In the worst incident last year, 61 people died in mudslides and flash floods in central Kenya.

In neighbouring Uganda, at least 13 people were killed this week in landslides in the east, the Uganda Red Cross said.
