Bawumia’s nomination marks new era in Ghana’s political history

Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) selected Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 election, marking the first time a northerner and Muslim will run for the presidency under the NPP since 1992.

Securing 61.47% of the vote in the primaries, Bawumia pledged to lead a cohesive and energized NPP in the election.

Despite significant challenges, including the nation’s severe economic crisis and widespread discontent over increased utility tariffs and taxes, Bawumia expressed optimism during his nomination speech, emphasizing the NPP’s transformative potential for Ghana.

With the election projected to be a competition between Bawumia and former President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), both hailing from the north, the NPP anticipates Bawumia’s candidacy will expand their influence in the north while maintaining their stronghold in the south, traditionally considered the NPP’s political heartland.
