General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan’s army-backed government has recalled its ambassador from Kenya in protest at Nairobi’s hosting of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as they prepare to establish a rival administration.
It marked a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations and further complicates efforts to resolve the nearly two-year-long conflict.
The RSF’s planned “peace and unity government” seeks to establish a parallel governing structure in the territories they control.
While details remain scarce, it appears to be an attempt to solidify their power base and potentially negotiate from a position of strength.
Kenya defends its actions, stating its engagement with the RSF is “compatible with Kenya’s role in peace negotiations.”
They argue that engaging with all parties is essential for effective mediation and achieving a lasting ceasefire.
