Burundi’s communications minister Gabby Bugaga has died in what the presidency described as an accident, offering no further details about the circumstances.
Images and videos circulating on social media, which have not been independently verified, appeared to show Bugaga’s body in a heavily damaged pickup truck on the roadside.
President Evariste Ndayishimiye expressed condolences in a message posted on X, praising Bugaga’s “courage, diligence and dedication” in public service.
The presidency did not elaborate on the nature of the incident, and no official investigation has been announced.
Bugaga, a former journalist, had been serving as communications minister since his appointment in August last year.
