A tragic bus accident in Ethiopia’s Oromiya region has left at least 26 people dead, state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting reported Tuesday.
The bus was traveling from Shambu, a town in western Ethiopia, to the capital Addis Ababa when it overturned, officials said.
Traffic safety inspector Asnake Mesfin from the East Wollega Zone confirmed that 42 more passengers sustained injuries, warning that the death toll could rise.
Authorities have yet to provide further details on the cause of the accident or the condition of the injured victims.
Ethiopia frequently experiences deadly road accidents due to poor driving standards, lack of traffic enforcement, and poorly maintained vehicles.
In December, a catastrophic crash in the southern Sidama region claimed at least 71 lives when a truck packed with passengers plunged into a river.
Officials continue to investigate the latest accident as the nation grapples with its ongoing road safety crisis.
