Calls to designate National Congress, MB as terrorist groups

Yasir Arman, leader of the Popular Movement for Democratic Revolutionary Current, has called for the dissolved National Congress Party (NCP) and the Islamic Movement, affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, to be designated as terrorist organizations, citing their role in Sudan’s ongoing conflict and past atrocities.

In an interview published by Al-Taghyeer newspaper, Arman accused the Islamic Movement of fostering resentment against the Sudanese people following its rejection during the 2019 popular revolution. He alleged that instead of reassessing its failed “Civilization Project,” which he linked to the secession of South Sudan and widespread violence, the group has embraced extremist tactics to undermine the revolution.

“Their efforts to crush the December revolution have only deepened the nation’s divisions,” Arman said. “They know they cannot defeat the revolutionaries through coups or war, which is why it’s critical to classify them as terrorist organizations to protect Sudan’s unity.”

Arman also condemned ongoing war crimes and genocide committed by both sides in the conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

The UN estimates the war has caused over 20,000 deaths and displaced roughly 14 million people. A separate U.S.-led study suggests the death toll may exceed 130,000, making Sudan the site of the world’s largest displacement crisis.

Arman concluded by urging Sudanese to remain steadfast: “We will defeat the war—it will not defeat us. Our fight is against those who hijacked the state and its institutions.”
