Car bomb blast rocks Mogadishu cafe, killing 5

A car bomb explosion ripped through a cafe in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Sunday night, killing at least five people and injuring around 20 others. The attack targeted a popular spot where patrons were gathered to watch the Euro 2024 final.

Local media outlets, including the Somali National News Agency and Somali National Television, cited police spokesman Major Abdifitah Aden Hassan as confirming the initial death toll and injuries. Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the blast and identify the perpetrators.

The explosion occurred in the capital city’s Hamarjajab district, near the busy seaport. The cafe, frequented by football fans, was reportedly packed with viewers as the Euro 2024 championship match reached its climax.

The attack has sent shockwaves through Mogadishu, raising concerns about security in the war-torn nation. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, but Somalia has a long history of violence perpetrated by extremist groups like al-Shabaab.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The injured are receiving treatment at local hospitals, and officials are expected to provide further updates on the situation as the investigation progresses.
