In a ceremony held on Saturday, General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the current leader of Chad, was officially elevated to the rank of Marshal.
This prestigious title mirrors that held by his late father, former President Idriss Déby Itno.
The decision to elevate General Deby Itno was approved by the National Transition Council, a body dominated by the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS).
The ceremony at the presidential palace marked a significant step in solidifying his authority.
The elevation comes ahead of crucial parliamentary and local elections scheduled for next weekend, which are being boycotted by the opposition.
General Deby Itno assumed power following the death of his father in 2021 and has since consolidated his hold on the country.
His elevation to the rank of Marshal further solidifies his position as the country’s supreme leader.
This move follows Chad’s recent decision to end military cooperation with France, marking a significant shift in the country’s foreign policy.
