Chad media group alarms over tighter controls before elections

Chad’s online news outlets have expressed concerns over new media restrictions imposed by the government just two months before the upcoming elections.

The Association of Chad’s Online Media (AMET) criticized the decisions by the main media authority as a move to limit the activities of online media.

The High Authority for Audiovisual Media (HAMA) announced that any private newspaper, printed or online, broadcasting sound or audiovisual content would face suspension.

Additionally, private media using Facebook pages to publish information other than original content would also be subject to penalties.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemned the decision as “groundless” and a threat to media pluralism.

AMET also raised concerns about the measures, stating they may exceed the legal framework.

These restrictions come amidst a backdrop of press freedom limitations under President Mahamat Deby, who took power in April 2021 following his father’s death.

The recent killing of a former intelligence commander and his son has further heightened tensions and led to increased security measures.

Opposition parties have announced their boycott of the December elections, citing a “harmful climate of dictatorship and terror.”

The World Organisation Against Torture has also warned of rising arrests and detentions without due process by the Chadian intelligence services.
