Chad has become the latest country to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara by opening a consulate in the disputed territory on Wednesday.
The move solidifies Chad’s support for Morocco’s position against the Polisario Front, which seeks to establish an independent state in the region.
Western Sahara has been a contentious issue for decades, with Morocco claiming the territory as its own and the Algeria-backed Polisario Front advocating for self-determination.
The territory’s status has been a subject of international dispute.
With the establishment of the new consulate, Chad joins a growing list of nations that have opened diplomatic missions in Western Sahara’s cities of Layoune and Dakhla.
A total of 29 countries have now officially recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the region.
The opening of the consulate is seen as a significant diplomatic victory for Morocco, as it further isolates the Polisario Front and strengthens its own position on the matter.
