Charity coalition pledges $6.5M to aid Sudan’s humanitarian crisis

A coalition of 15 nonprofits and humanitarian aid organizations will announce new investments to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) annual meeting on Monday.

The Coalition for Mutual Aid in Sudan, which includes The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Global Giving, will donate at least $2 million to mutual aid groups in the country by the end of the year.

The CGI meeting, which focuses on addressing global challenges, will also feature a new women’s health initiative announced by First Lady Jill Biden.

Biden emphasized the need for more research and funding to improve women’s health outcomes.

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan, caused by ongoing conflict between the military and paramilitary forces, has displaced millions of people and created a severe food shortage.

The U.N. estimates that over 14,000 people have been killed and 33,000 injured.

The Coalition for Mutual Aid in Sudan aims to provide critical support to local aid groups on the front lines of the crisis.

Greg Milne, the CGI CEO, praised the coalition for its efforts to bring together diverse organizations to address the urgent needs of the Sudanese people.

Other notable speakers at the CGI meeting include Prince Harry, who will discuss his work with the World Health Organization to reduce violence against children, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

CEOs from Pfizer, Mastercard, IKEA, Pinterest, Sanofi, and Chobani will also be in attendance.
