Chinese nationals kidnapped in suspected Ghana piracy attack

Three Chinese nationals are missing and feared kidnapped after a suspected pirate attack on a Ghanaian-registered fishing vessel, Ghana’s military announced Saturday.

According to the statement, seven armed individuals boarded the vessel on Thursday shortly before 6 p.m. (1800 GMT) and fired warning shots.

The attackers remained on board for about three hours while some crew members hid in fear.

Once the attackers departed, the crew emerged to find the ship’s captain, chief mate, and chief engineer missing.

Their disappearance has raised concerns of a possible abduction, prompting a swift response from Ghanaian authorities.

The vessel has since docked at Tema Fishing Harbour, where Ghana’s navy is leading an investigation into the incident.

Officials have not disclosed the identities of the missing crew members or provided details on any ransom demands.

Piracy remains a persistent threat in the Gulf of Guinea, where attacks on commercial and fishing vessels have been reported despite increased security efforts.

Ghanaian authorities are working to determine the whereabouts of the missing crew and the motives behind the attack.

The investigation continues as concerns grow over the safety of maritime workers in the region.
