Cholera and dengue fever spread in wide areas of Sudan

Cholera has spread widely in the suburb of El-Haj Yousif, east of the capital, Khartoum, amid a severe shortage of medicines and medical staff. Volunteers accused the Sudanese army of preventing the arrival of medicine to the area, fearing that they might fall into the hands of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Meanwhile, cases of dengue fever are increasing rapidly in the states of Kassala and Al-Jazira.

The fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF since April 15 in Khartoum and vast areas in the Darfur and Kordofan regions has exacerbated the health situation in Sudan.

Most hospitals have gone out of service, and most pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies have been looted and vandalized.

Moaz Shams, the spokesperson for the Emergency Room in East Nile, a youth organization in Khartoum, stated, “From October 1st until the 3rd, Elban Jadeed Hospital in the El-Haj Yousif area received around 40 cases of cholera, including four deaths, bringing the total number of cases since the disease outbreak on September 22nd to 119.”

He revealed a severe shortage of medicines and medical staff at Elban Jadeed Hospital, the only medical facility operating in the El-Haj Yousif suburb.

Meanwhile, a medical source at Al-Qadarif Teaching Hospital said that the total number of dengue fever cases in the state since its appearance in September reached 3,390 cases, including 19 deaths.

Al-Qadarif State in eastern Sudan is one of the most affected regions by the spread of dengue fever and waterborne diarrhea.

One of the dengue fever patients in Al-Qadarif informed about the increase in the cost of rapid disease tests, ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 Sudanese pounds in private laboratories.

He also mentioned the exploitation by pharmacy owners who have increased the price of paracetamol solution to about 3,000 Sudanese pounds due to the high number of infection cases.
