Cholera deaths surpass 300 as Sudan war worsens

The ongoing civil war in Sudan has worsened the humanitarian crisis, leading to a surge in infections like cholera, which has claimed over 300 lives, according to a World Health Organization official on Friday.

WHO representative Margaret Harris reported that 11,327 cholera cases and 316 related deaths have been confirmed.

Additionally, cases of dengue fever and meningitis are also increasing across the region.

Speaking at a media briefing, Harris emphasized the alarming spread of these diseases amidst the ongoing conflict, which is severely impacting health systems and access to medical care.

The rising numbers reflect a deteriorating situation as basic healthcare services are disrupted, contributing to the rapid spread of communicable diseases among vulnerable populations.

“We anticipate the actual figures are higher than reported,” Harris stated, highlighting the likelihood of underreported cases given the challenging conditions and limited monitoring in the conflict zones.
