Cyclone Chido death toll rises to 94 in Mozambique

The death toll from Cyclone Chido has risen to 94 in Mozambique, according to the country’s disaster management agency.

The cyclone struck the country last week, causing widespread destruction across several regions.

Initially, the storm was reported to have killed 76 people, but the toll has now increased as authorities assess the damage.

Cyclone Chido first devastated the French island territory of Mayotte before making its way to the African mainland.

The storm caused catastrophic damage, destroying over 110,000 homes across Mozambique.

The northern province of Cabo Delgado was particularly hard-hit, with winds reaching speeds of 260 km/h (160 mph) and heavy rainfall of up to 250 millimetres in a single day.

This region, already grappling with the ongoing Islamist insurgency, suffered extensive damage.

In Mecufi district, a mosque lost its roof due to the powerful gusts, as captured in heartbreaking images shared by UNICEF.

Mozambique continues to bear the brunt of the cyclone’s fury, with the highest death toll recorded so far.

The impact on Mayotte, the French territory, has been equally devastating. Seven days after the cyclone hit, authorities reported 35 dead and over 2,500 injured.
