At least 28 people have been killed in a gunmen attack in central Nigeria’s Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang confirmed on Tuesday, describing the incident as “tragic” and “senseless.”
The assault took place on Sunday night in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area, where armed men opened fire on residents, leaving dozens dead and others injured. Earlier casualty figures had been lower before authorities revised the toll upward.
Mutfwang, who visited the affected community and met with injured survivors, extended condolences to the victims’ families and pledged that those responsible would be brought to justice. He said security forces had been ordered to intensify operations to track down the attackers.
Plateau State, located in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, has long been a hotspot for recurring violence, often driven by communal tensions, criminal activity, and disputes over land and resources. Despite repeated security interventions, gunmen attacks remain frequent in the region.
No group has claimed responsibility for the latest attack.
