Displacement around the world surges to 83.4 million

A staggering 83.4 million people were internally displaced worldwide by the close of 2024, a new peak according to the Global Report on Internal Displacement 2025.

The Norwegian Refugee Council’s IDMC revealed this unprecedented figure, doubling since 2018 and equaling Germany’s entire population.

Conflict and violence forced 73.5 million individuals to flee within their own nations.

Sudan witnessed a record 11.6 million internally displaced persons, nearly 60% of the global total, while Gaza’s population faced near-total displacement.

Disasters triggered another 45.8 million internal movements, the highest since 2008, with the US recording 11 million climate-related displacements.

Experts urge immediate global solidarity and action to address this escalating humanitarian and political challenge.
