Djibouti confirms Guelleh wins sixth term with 97 percent vote

Djibouti’s Constitutional Council confirmed President Ismail Omar Guelleh won a sixth consecutive election with 97.01 percent.

Guelleh, 78, has ruled since 1999 unchallenged in the Horn of Africa nation, strategically positioned at global crossroads.

The election outcome was largely expected, with initial results showing him at 97.81 percent against a little-known opponent.

Official results confirmed 204,874 votes for Guelleh and 6,318 votes for his rival Mohamed Farah Samatar, according to state media report citing Constitutional Council.

Djibouti sits on the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, gateway between Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, vital for global trade routes.

The small nation hosts foreign military bases from France, United States, China, Japan, and Italy, reflecting its strategic weight.

Guelleh had pledged retirement after his fifth term, but constitutional changes allowed him to extend rule beyond age limits.
