DR Congo military says M23 rebels launch attacks after ceasefire

The military in the Democratic Republic of Congo has accused the M23 rebel alliance of launching fresh attacks on their positions in the eastern part of the country.

This development comes just days after the rebel group, known as the Alliance Fleuve Congo (M23/AFC), declared a ceasefire.

Military spokesperson Sylvain Ekenge stated that the Rwandan army and M23/AFC forces are actively reinforcing their presence with both personnel and equipment.

According to the Congolese military, the recent hostilities have targeted government forces in multiple locations.

These include areas within the Walikale territory of North Kivu, as well as regions in South Kivu, specifically Mulamba, Bulonge in Walungu territory, and the highlands of Minembwe in Fizi territory.

\Ekenge affirmed the Congolese army’s unwavering resolve and readiness to respond to protect civilians and their property.

The military emphasized its right to counter any hostile actions that could undermine the declared pause in fighting initiated by the M23/AFC themselves.

The rebels had announced their intention to “reposition” forces from Walikale in North Kivu, citing support for peace initiatives and political dialogue.

Following this announcement, the Congolese military had urged self-defense forces to de-escalate and prioritize peace talks through the Luanda and Nairobi processes.
