At least 14 people have died after a DR Congo plane crash involving a military aircraft in the southwestern province of Kwango.
The Congolese army plane was travelling from Kikwit to the capital, Kinshasa, on Friday when it developed a technical problem, according to Al Jazeera, citing Congolese officials.
The aircraft attempted to land in Kenge before crashing into a residential area.
Senior military officials and civilians were among those killed.
DR Congo plane crash leaves 14 dead
Congolese military spokesperson Major-General Efomi Ekenge confirmed that 14 people died in the crash.
“All those on board died,” Ekenge said, according to Al Jazeera.
Twelve victims were burned beyond recognition, while the pilot was found dead outside the aircraft, he added.
The military said the passengers included civilians, military personnel and members of an official delegation travelling with two generals.
Plane developed technical problem
The aircraft had been flying from Kikwit towards Kinshasa when it encountered a technical fault.
It then attempted to land in Kenge, the capital of Kwango province.
However, Kwango Deputy Governor Remy Saki Bokinda said there was no landing strip available in Kenge.
The aircraft subsequently crashed into a residential plot, Bokinda said, according to Al Jazeera.
Authorities have not provided further details about the technical problem.
Investigation opened into crash
Congolese authorities have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
Military spokesperson Ekenge said investigators would work to establish what caused the aircraft to crash.
No further information about the identities of all those killed was immediately available.
The incident adds to a series of transport-related tragedies reported in DR Congo, a vast Central African country where difficult terrain and limited infrastructure can complicate travel between regions.
