DR Congo PM warns of escalating conflict after 7,000 deaths

Violence in eastern DR Congo has claimed over 7,000 lives since January, with civilians among the dead, Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka announced.

The Rwanda-backed M23 group has seized key cities, including Goma and Bukavu, forcing tens of thousands to flee.

Tuluka told the UN Human Rights Council that more than 2,500 bodies had been buried unidentified, while 1,500 remained in morgues.

UN chief António Guterres warned the escalating violence could spark a regional war, urging urgent action to “silence the guns.”

Tuluka accused Rwanda of illegally exploiting Congo’s minerals and questioned who was purchasing them, pointing to global tech companies.
