Drone attack hits Chad border camp

A drone attack killed two Chadian soldiers and seriously wounded another at a military camp near the border with Sudan in the early hours of Friday, according to local authorities and security sources.

The strike targeted a camp in the border town of Tine shortly before dawn. Hamit Hassan, the prefect of the department that includes Tine, confirmed the casualties but said there was no confirmed information regarding responsibility for the attack.

Security officials said investigations were under way to determine the origin of the drone, as authorities assess the broader security implications for the border region. Military units in eastern Chad have been placed on heightened alert, with additional ground forces deployed to reinforce positions around Tine.

The area holds strategic and humanitarian significance. Tine serves as a transit point for Sudanese refugees fleeing the conflict across the border before they are transferred to camps further inland. Aid workers say relocation efforts have been slowed by funding shortages, particularly for water, sanitation and shelter at interior sites.

The incident comes amid ongoing instability linked to the war in Sudan, which has displaced more than 12 million people, according to humanitarian assessments cited by media. The conflict has increasingly affected neighbouring countries, raising concerns about cross border security and the safety of civilians and military personnel alike.
