Ebola cases in DRC reach over 1,200 with 321 deaths recorded

The number of Ebola virus cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has climbed to 1,203, with 321 deaths recorded since mid-May.

Health authorities confirmed the figures in a late Friday update as infections continue to emerge across affected regions.

The Health Ministry also reported 148 recoveries, while 419 patients remain in isolation or under hospital care.

The outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo strain and has spread across 34 health zones in three provinces.

It includes Ituri, which remains the epicentre, along with North Kivu and South Kivu in the eastern region.

Health officials warned that community resistance to postmortem testing is slowing containment efforts on the ground.

They also cited limited treatment capacity in Ituri and contact tracing rates below the required 95% threshold.

Authorities urged citizens to report suspected cases promptly and follow hygiene measures to curb further transmission.

They also cautioned against handling bodies of the deceased, describing it as a critical driver of infection.

Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya said international partners remain committed to supporting the response and containment efforts.

He noted coordination with the World Health Organization, European health agencies, and Congolese authorities in managing the crisis.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said conflict is complicating efforts to fight the outbreak effectively.

He warned that war is blocking access, scattering contacts, and deepening fear and mistrust among affected communities.
