Egypt cautions against neglecting Sudanese crisis amidst war in Gaza

Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, cautioned against global inattention to Sudan’s crisis during a meeting with Annette Weber, the European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, held on Sunday.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister called for enhanced regional and international efforts to facilitate constructive dialogues between conflicting parties for resolving Sudan’s crisis. He also welcomed Europe’s support for Egypt’s mediation efforts in uniting Sudanese civil forces to address the root causes of the crisis and initiate a comprehensive political process.

Shoukry emphasized the need to fully respect Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, preserving the state, its institutions, and its capabilities. He stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach to address the humanitarian consequences of the crisis and urged countries and donors to fulfill their commitments made during the UN Donor Conference in June.

At the conference, donors pledged nearly $1.5 billion to aid Sudan in managing the humanitarian crisis and assisting neighbouring countries in accommodating refugees fleeing the conflict.

The EU’s envoy expressed deep appreciation for Egypt’s substantial role in the region and reiterated the EU’s commitment to ongoing coordination with Egypt on various regional issues.

Egypt has received over 310,000 Sudanese who have fled their country after war broke out between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on 15 April, according to previous remarks by Shoukry.
