Egyptian and UK officials discuss solutions for regional crises

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell convened in Cairo on Thursday to deliberate critical regional crises.

The meeting underscored the urgency of addressing escalating tensions in Gaza, Syria, and Sudan, with both sides advocating for diplomatic solutions.

Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s commitment to brokering an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, stressing the dire need for humanitarian aid access.

He condemned Israel’s ongoing violations against Palestinians, labeling them breaches of international conventions and human rights.

The minister reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering stance on a just resolution for Palestine, advocating a two-state solution.

This vision includes an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The humanitarian toll in Gaza remains devastating, with over 45,600 fatalities, predominantly women and children, reported since October 2023.

Turning to Syria, Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s support for a political transition led by Syrians, devoid of external interference.

He emphasized the preservation of Syria’s territorial integrity and unity, vital for enduring peace in the war-torn nation.

Discussions on Sudan highlighted Egypt’s call for an immediate cease-fire and rapid humanitarian aid deployment to conflict zones.

Both parties acknowledged the need for fortifying national institutions to ensure Sudan’s stability amidst ongoing unrest.

The talks underscored Egypt and the UK’s shared responsibility in fostering stability and addressing pressing humanitarian crises.
