Egyptian, South Sudanese presidents hold talks in Cairo

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit at the Al-Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo.

The two leaders are expected to discuss a range of issues related to cooperation between the two countries and development prospects.

The visit aims at strengthening relations between Juba and Cairo in various fields, besides discussion on regional and international matters of concern.

The visit to Egypt comes less than six months since President Kiir and several leaders in the region met in Cairo in July 2023 to attend the Sudan neighbours summit, which aimed to discuss ways to resolve the conflict in Sudan peacefully.

The meeting, chaired by al-Sisi, attracted representatives from seven countries that border Sudan, including South Sudan, Egypt, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Libya and the Central African Republic (CAR).

Both al-Sisi and Kiir face upcoming elections in their respective countries.
Egypt will hold its presidential elections this December, while South Sudan’s first-ever vote, in which Kiir will run for the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party, is planned for late 2024.
