Egypt’s main opposition leaves presidential race

Egyptian opposition politician Ahmed al-Tantawi withdrew from the presidential race, citing repeated harassment and arrests by the authorities.

Egypt’s Hope highlighted concerns about the incumbent president, emphasizing the need for introspection within the presidency to address Egypt’s issues effectively.

Despite initial support, Tantawi fell short of the required 25,000 endorsements, securing only 14,000, as confirmed by his campaign coordinator.

He stressed that sustainable stability hinges on the government’s adherence to the constitution and rule of law, not on oppression.

The deadline for presidential candidacy endorsements is October 15, with the requirement of support from 20 lawmakers or 25,000 citizens.

Tantawi’s campaign faced persistent harassment and detainment, with over 100 supporters reportedly arrested.

Egypt scheduled its presidential election for December 10-12, and President Sisi declared his intent for a third term.

Allegations of surveillance on Tantawi’s communications since September 2021 were also made.
