Rescue efforts continue in Freetown, Sierra Leone, after a seven-story building collapsed, killing at least eight people. The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) reported that six survivors have been pulled from the rubble, but more remain trapped, with some still able to communicate their locations.
The collapse occurred between 11:00 and 12:00 local time on Monday, with two girls and a boy, all under five years old, among the victims. Rescue teams are using cranes, tools, and their hands to clear debris, while the cause of the collapse is under investigation.
The NDMA said the building housed both residential and commercial units. The agency’s head, Brima Sesay, emphasized the dangers of using unqualified contractors and substandard materials and called for increased public awareness to prevent future collapses in the country.
